SEO Tip: Site speed testing & Usability

Website usability and speeds can play havoc with your ability to convert customers. If you are embarking on a marketing campaign or SEO review be sure to include this as an area to look at.

We recently tweeted about a post in Digital Media regarding Google’s Matt Cutts stating that a websites loading speed is likely to play an increasing factor in how a website ranks within Googles search results. Unfortunately this is an area often overlooked as web publishers have added on new features and ever more bandwidth hungry content.

Whilst growing your website content and offering and increasing your user base is crucial understanding that this is only half the battle is important to note. As part of this, any comprehensive SEO or PPC campaign strategy should include this by looking at overall usability and website speed – there is no point using resources to increase your websites traffic if you are not converting these users into customers!

A helpful tool in reviewing your websites overall speed and potential areas of improvement is a freely available tool – YSlow, or you can even use the inbuilt developer functions in some browsers such as Google’s Chrome. These can help identify potential issues which may be increasing your websites bounce rate or conversion figures.

Another helpful tip is to test your landing pages on groups of people for feedback. Simple A/B testing can be managed with customers, clients, friends or even family. Having someone outside your company provide feedback can be invaluable in picking up on things you may not have noticed.
